British Hussars Officer's Uniform, circa 1888, with Blue Wool Dolman
This magnificent British Hussar Officer's Uniform from circa 1888 exemplifies outstanding craftsmanship. The ensemble includes a blue wool dolman, richly decorated with heavy gold lace and intricate cord knots, and buff wool breeches adorned with Austrian knots. The pelisse, a fur-trimmed short jacket matching the dolman, is worn draped over the shoulder, secured by a gold cord and bullion lanyard. Cordovan leather boots, made by Codner & Coombs, are trimmed with gold cord and feature bright gilt spurs.
The uniform is complemented by a dark red silk cord belt, heavily embellished with gold bullion, and a gold lace pouch belt lined with red Morocco leather. The gilt sterling silver hardware, hallmarked Birmingham 1886, features a Victorian Crown and intertwined initials "DG." The sword belt, sword slings, and sabretache slings are similarly decorated, with fittings in heavy gilt. Both the sabretache and pouch are embroidered with a gold wire bullion Napoleonic-style eagle on dark red fabric.
Accompanied by a scarlet plume with a gilt mount, housed in a Japanned tin tube, the entire ensemble is stored in a large Japanned tin tailor's box. Despite the missing red silk lining of the pelisse, the uniform is in near mint condition, highlighting its exceptional quality and preservation.
